The essence of Swiss Startup Days
Swiss Startup Days are not merely a conference but a dynamic convergence of talent and opportunity. Each year, it provides a unique platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and discussions on pivotal topics within the startup ecosystem. The event is meticulously designed to ensure that every participant—from fledgling startups to seasoned investors—derives maximum value. It’s a day when the entire Swiss startup family comes together under one roof, fostering a spirit of collaboration and innovation.
Unveiling the Youngsters: A showcase of promising startups
A highlight of SUD 2024 was the Youngsters pitching format, a transformative journey designed to spotlight Switzerland’s hidden startup gems. Prior to the event, more than 120 startups applied for this opportunity, and after a selection process, 18 startups were chosen to present their innovative ideas on the national stage. These ventures, primarily in their pre- or seed phase, showcased groundbreaking technologies and sought investment and expert advice.
The jury’s picks: Catches of the jury
Among the 18 startups, three stood out and were honored as the “Catches of the Jury”:
- Inveel: Founded in 2024 as a spin-off from the Paul Scherrer Institut, Inveel specializes in low-cost, high-speed production of extreme-high resolution printed electronics. Their technology enables circuits and electrodes with line widths down to 100 nanometers, significantly enhancing flexible nanoelectronics’ capabilities. Inveel’s customizable, high-resolution printing solutions promise to revolutionize the industry by reducing production costs while maintaining quality.
- Lightium: This Zurich-based startup, founded in 2023, is pioneering thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) technology for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Lightium’s TFLN platform offers ultra-high speeds, low power consumption, and new functionalities for applications in telecommunications and data communications. The startup’s innovation and potential for scalability, particularly in Switzerland and the U.S., impressed the jury.
- Manukai: An ETH Zurich spin-off, Manukai is transforming metal machining with its AI-powered CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) Copilot. This tool simplifies programming within CAM software by learning from programmers’ preferences and offering suggestions. Manukai’s technology includes geometry validation, feature recognition, automatic toolpath generation, and optimization, significantly enhancing manufacturing efficiency.
AI: The heart of discussions
This year’s event underscored the growing influence of AI across various sectors. The introductory keynote by Berkeley Professor Stuart Russell set the tone for the day, emphasizing the need for AI systems to be designed with safety and human interest at the forefront. Russell’s insights on the potential and challenges of general-purpose AI systems captivated the audience.
At the ETH AI Centre’s AI stage, visitors delved into the SwissAI initiative and its support for startups. Panels featuring AI startups, such as Largo and csky.ai, were particularly popular, highlighting the interest in AI-driven solutions. A notable roundtable discussion with Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and 16 ecosystem representatives focused on how Switzerland can maintain its leadership in AI innovation.
Networking and insights
Beyond the formal presentations and discussions, SUD 2024 was a hotbed of networking and collaboration. The Kursaal in Bern thrummed with entrepreneurial energy, as over 1000 attendees engaged in meaningful exchanges. From investors and startup-support programs to corporate partners and government representatives, the event facilitated connections that could catalyze future innovations.
